BACKGROUND AND CONTEXT
Field epidemiologists play a critical role in producing evidence to inform public health decisions, where accurate data interpretation is essential. The credibility and utility of epidemiological findings depend on making the right causal inference. Confounding is an inherent threat to the causal interpretation of effects from observational epidemiological studies (cohort/case-control).
